Maintains the situation achieved following the active orthodontic treatment
Retainers are the consolidation devices used to hold the teeth in their new position following the fixed orthodontic treatment. Thus, adaptation of the gingival and bony tissue is ensured in the new situation. The manner and time of use are determined by the orthodontist.
Moving retainers are in the form of Essix plates and Hawley aprons and are supplied with protective device boxes. In bonded (fixed) retainers, a thin wire is placed on the back surfaces of the front teeth.
Patients express an increased amount of saliva in their mouths within the first few days following the use of the retainers. This is a fairly natural condition, which is caused by the placement of a new object and frequent stimulation of the salivary glands. There are of slight changes in speech function in the first few days.
